The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963

Theme: Friendship
Chapter 3: The World's Greatest Dinosaur War Ever

"Be careful with your words.  Once they are said, they can only be forgiven, not forgotten."

How does this quote relate to Kenny's situation with his friend Rufus?  Explain.

  1. The quote relates to Kenny's situation with his friend Rufus because when Kenny and Rufus were on the bus, all the kids on the bus were teasing Rufus about his clothes and Kenny thought it was kind of funny and laughed. Once Kenny did that, Rufus was mad but forgave him. Those actions were still not forgotten to Rufus, though.

  2. I think that they relate because Kenny laughed and Rufus was being teased. It also relates because Kenny said those words and Rufus forgave him but he will probably never forgive him.

  3. Kenny laughs at Rufus because Larry Dunn walked to the seat and he teased him about his under where. Rufus was really sad and he didn’t play with Kenny and he didn’t eat with him anymore. Kenny went to Rufus house and Rufus didn’t forget him and Rufus came to Kenny house and he forgiven him and they play but he remember that for ever.

  4. Kenny really hurt Rufus’ feelings because Kenny laughed at him. So Rufus got mad at Kenny but Kenny didn’t mean to laugh he just thought it was funny. Rufus forgave Kenny but he didn’t forget it.

  5. This quote relates to Kenny’s situation with Rufus when Rufus gets made fun of on the bus, and Kenny laughed at him. But Kenny didn’t mean to laugh at him it just came out. He thought it was because Cody had a funny face when he was looking at his underpants. Or when every body else was laughing he just couldn’t contain him self. He couldn’t make Rufus forget that he laughed at him, but he could hope that he would forgive him.

  6. The quote, “Be careful with your words. Once they are said, they can only be forgiven, not forgotten,” relates to Kenny and Rufus’ situation because I realized Rufus and Cody come from a low-income family. The jeans they share everyday became a joke to Larry Dunn. He, trying to be funny, said it out loud. Rufus and Cody were very embarrassed at the joke Larry made. As an automatic reaction, Kenny found himself laughing about the rude joke. As Kenny was laughing, Rufus gave him a glare that Kenny could have expected. Although Rufus didn’t speak a word, and his facial expression did not change, Kenny got the message. After that, Kenny realized he was feeling alone at lunch, and playing dinosaurs. Kenny went to see Rufus at his house. He brought his dinosaurs and told him it was his turn to be the Americans. Rufus rejected playing with him. Kenny leaked the news to his mother out of guilt and sorrow, and she fixed it. They became friends again. I think the quote relates to the situation because Kenny did an action, he later realized he shouldn’t have done. He asked for forgiveness, the first time, didn’t work out. But after Kenny spilled it to his mom, everything was back to normal. Rufus and Kenny are now friends again, but Rufus may never forget what Kenny said.

  7. It relates to the story because Larry made a joke about Rufus and Cody his little brother. The joke was that they shared a pair of pants. Larry asked Rufus and his brother if they shared underwear too. Kenny laughed by accident. After that, Rufus gave Kenny a face and his face expression didn’t change so Kenny got the message. Rufus wouldn’t play with Kenny or eat lunch with him after that. Kenny felt sad. Then Kenny’s mother stepped in and then at the end of the chapter Rufus forgave him.

  8. This quote relates to Kenny’s situation because Larry Dunn made a joke about Rufus and Cody his little brother. The whole bus laughed at them and Kenny did too. That made Rufus feel really badly and he thought he needed a break from Kenny to think about what happened. Rufus went to Kenny’s house a couple of days later and Kenny apologized to Rufus and they made up.
I think that Kenny laughing at the joke Larry made about Rufus still stays with Rufus but he still forgave Kenny knowing that Kenny didn’t really mean to laugh.

  9. Kenny laughed when Larry Dunn said something rude to Rufus, Rufus didn’t like it and Rufus didn’t talk to him for three to four days. Kenny tried to cheer him up but it didn’t work. This relates to the quote because Kenny did something bad to Rufus and Rufus forgave him but did not forget it.

  10. The quote is the same because when Larry Dunn said something to Rufus and Cody, the kids on the bus were laughing even Kenny did. Rufus looked at him. When they got to school Rufus moved around in his seat so that his back was at Kenny. When Kenny got home he got his dinosaurs and brought them to Rufus’ house but Rufus did not want to play with him then Kenny went home. When Kenny got home from school his mom wanted him in the kitchen to talk to him he was talking about school and Rufus. After school Rufus came to Kenny’s to play. And the quote is talking about Rufus and Kenny. Kenny has forgiven Rufus. Rufus will never forget what Kenny said.

  11. The thing that happened is that everyone on the bus started to laugh so it was hard to hold in his he just couldn’t help it. It took a long time for Rufus to accept Kenny’s apology for what he did. Rufus accepted Kenny’s apology but I know that Rufus will never forget what Kenny did.

  12. (Be careful with your words. Once they are said, they can only be forgiven, not forgotten.) This sentence does relate to Kenny and Rufus’ meltdown. It relates to it because Kenny laughed about the pants and underwear comment that L.J. Jones made. Then after that Rufus gave Kenny a look and left him alone. Kenny didn’t mean to laugh it just happened. So then one day Kenny’s mother sat him down and asked him about school and Rufus. She wanted to know why he wasn’t coming over any more; Kenny spilled it to his mother. So then that day when Rufus and Cody got off Kenny’s mother was waiting for them. Then that night at 5:30 someone was at the door and Kenny went and opened it, there in the door way stood Rufus and Cody stood. Rufus didn’t like it when he thought Kenny was his friend and then Kenny laughs at him. When Kenny went to Rufus’s house to apologize he turned him down. Then after his mom talked to Rufus they went to Kenny’s house and Kenny apologized for what he did and then they were back to being friends.

  13. Kenny laughed along with everyone else who was laughing at Rufus and Cody and that hurt Rufus’ feelings. The first time Kenny tried to apologize Rufus didn’t listen to him and then Kenny’s mom talked to Rufus and he forgave Kenny.

  14. Rufus is mad at Kenny because Kenny laughed at Rufus. Kenny did not mean to laugh but it just blurted out. Kenny’s mom helped them be friends again. They played with toy dinosaurs but Rufus will never forget about what Kenny did.
